Michael Ellison looking to repeat Runcorn Linnets success
Runcorn Linnets have reached playoffs in four out of the last five years but have failed to earn promotion.
Michael Ellison was biding his time and awaiting the next opportunity, just months after leading Widnes to new dizzying heights following their Northern Premier League West title win, when the phone call from Runcorn Linnets came.
The tactician saw his hopes of managing at step three of the non-league system snatched away from him after the club folded.
Fast forward seven months later and in the wake of Runcorn Linnets’ 5-0 defeat to Witton Albion on New Years’ Day, Ellison was earmarked and endorsed to become the new manager by the departing Brad Cooke.
All was not lost at the beginning of the calendar year as they sat outside the playoffs by a point. In the 19 games that have followed, Linnets have been on an incredible run since then, picking up 38 points in the process out of a possible 57.
Playoffs has been a minimum expectation at the APEC Taxis Stadium but since 2020, they have failed four times in earning promotion to the Premier Division.
They managed a fourth-place finish, earning a place in the playoffs against Stalybridge Celtic on Tuesday. Ellison has praised his squad after picking themselves up after the sobering defeat to Witton.
