Accrington Stanley trigger Charlie Caton buyout as Chester exit confirmed
League Two side Accrington Stanley have completed the signing of Charlie Caton from Chester.
Accrington Stanley have completed the signing of Charlie Caton from Chester for an undisclosed fee after activating his buyout clause.
The 22-year-old has 13 goals so far this season for the Seals and a clause within his exit will see the club bank a percentage of any future sale.
It is believed that the departure is the third biggest transfer fee received in the clubs history.
In recent weeks, Off The Park learned that there was some noise around a possible exit for Caton in January, with a suggestion that Fleetwood Town were also interested. Initially, no formal approach to Chester had been made.
However, in the last couple of days, the League Two club have accelerated their approach for the Chester top goalscorer.
With Accrington triggering his release clause, it took the opportunity out of Chester’s hands.
Off The Park understands that there is disappointment that the club is losing striker, though there is no concern having already acquired Connor Woods.
For the playoff-chasers, the move will further line the coffers with Calum McIntyre keen on further bolstering the squad ahead of the business end of the campaign.
A Welsh Premier League club had a significant bid rejected for Caton in the summer, and made an offer in excess of the buyout but the 22-year-old turned down the approach.
